The sheer excitement… Saturday morning grocery shopping at Mercadona, San Pedro!

But this was no normal shopping experience… 

There were plenty of car parking spaces at 9.10 am which itself it a little unusual.  Stretched across the car park for 100m were carbon life forms - gloved, masked and spaced at 3 meter intervals.  I dutifully joined the back of the queue and watched everyone slowly advance.  There was an eerie quiet.  It felt like I was in a scene of an apocalypse or ‘the morning after’ type movie!  This is so contrary to the usual shopping experience – the hustle, bustle and din. Spanish people love to talk and they tend to talk loudly!  At present we are required to go shopping alone, so no families, no kids.  

As I entered the store I was counted in as number 92! The store's security agent explained that they are allowing 120 customers in the store at any one time.  It’s really quite responsible that they are taking these precautionary measures to protect customers and their staff.  The store itself was pretty much fully stocked with produce.  An announcement played periodically advising there was no need to bulk buy.   Again at the checkout we were required to keep our distance from the person in front.  They had erected perspex screens between customer and checkout assistant to prevent the spread of any airborne germs – again a responsible initiative.

As I left the car park and drove up the road I peered into my rear view mirror with mixed emotions – the day’s outing was almost over and I wouldn’t be seeing the store for another week to 10 days!!!

The rest of the day was spent at home fighting for bandwidth with movie watching teens.  It’s been pretty peaceful and quiet, which after the excitement of the morning’s outing is just what I needed!
