Growing up in London, the weather never really bothered me – cold, rain, wind, as a kid I was out in all weathers, playing sports and getting on with things like it was just other day.
Over the weekend I listened to a podcast where Wim Hof was interviewed. I had come across the name before, but never followed up. Wim Hof aka ‘the Iceman’ has a number of records relating to feats carried out in extremely cold conditions. Such things as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, swimming significant distances under ice and standing in a container of ice for almost 2 hours.
So what?!
I am confident that neither you or I are likely to undertake such extreme challenges - I know I am not. What was interesting and particularly relevant to the current pandemic is that he claims it is scientifically proven that the ‘Wim Hof Method’ amongst other things:

He comes across as a special character and quite exceptional. His method revolves around cold therapy, breathing and commitment – OK in its most basic form cold showers and deep breathing!

Let’s face it, we all have the knack of breathing, it’s simply a more deliberate way. Then we all shower, but simply need to add the cold element to it!
I have done breathing exercises before and taken cold showers, but never consistently, nor a part of a system. He offers a free, helpful mini course and a free downloadable app to get you started. He makes very clear who should and should not use his method, when to use it and when not to. Just to be clear - I am not advocating that you try this at home or anywhere else, just sharing my initial experiences.
I’ve just gotten started so am no expert, but I was drawn to the simplicity. The idea of building the immune system, alkalising and reducing inflammation through breath and showers was enough to get my attention at this time.

Since living in Spain and enjoying the Andalucian climate, I must admit to becoming a fair weather golfer – I mean why would you go out in the rain or cold when tomorrow is going to be sunny?! On the other hand back in March I did go swimming in the Atlantic three times – sure it was cold, but I got used to it and afterwards felt amazing!
