Today l escaped – twice!

My sister had reminded me that essentially we have a four days weekend coming up due to the Easter break. Thursday and Friday are holidays and Saturday the shops which are open will probably only open half day.

I decided to get to San Pedro Mercadona early to buy some fresh fruit and veg. My plan was to be in and out before the masses arrived – others had the same idea!  The shops are always busy on the Wednesday before Easter.  But the car queue to get into the parking was backed out 100m onto the street.    No way I was waiting in that queue, so dashed across to the store on the Benahavis road.

Result!
Straight in and a fully stocked store.  And I had the bonus of bumping into a friend. Lewis and I greeted with an elbow tap (hopefully not too high risk!) and chatted from under our masks for a few minutes.  On the way there I had noticed a police blockade stopping cars coming from the direction of Benahavis and there was already a stack building up.  I returned home the back route and didn’t see a car!

My second outing was most exciting, this time I ventured all the way to Iceland behind Puerto Banus.I had request from Noah for some baking items which I hadn’t found in Mercadona and Iceland was sure to have a supply.

In the 16.5 years I have been here, I have never known the stretch of road from San Pedro to Puerto Banus (about 4km) to be so quiet during the day!  Usually it busy with cars turning into Puerto Banus possibly to go to El Corte Ingles, the big department store.Or they drive up past the old bull ring to Central Plaza, full of cafes and bustling eateries, or on to Nueva Andalucia, Las Brisas and Aloha and all the charming urbanisations in the Golf Valley.

I managed to purchase everything requested (plus additional items of course).  Let’s see what Noah bakes over the coming days.  I might even get baking myself.  We have some overripe bananas, perfect for my world famous banana bread (well, Caroline and Rob from Ireland have sampled it as have some of my regular golfing buddies!).

It sounds so strange to say it, but those two ‘excursions’ has given me a spring in my step! I used to take my liberty for granted, yet 25 days ago, this countrywide full lock down was enforced on us, due to something we can’t see, smell or touch.  Quite how much longer it is going to go on for, who knows.

I just hope the sun start shining again very soon.

Keep safe and keep in touch,

Anthony
